Mt Elgon Expedition

Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano in East Africa, located on the border between Uganda and Kenya. It is the fourth highest mountain in Africa, and is known for its diverse ecosystems and unique wildlife. The mountain is a popular destination for hiking and trekking, with several routes leading to the summit where hikers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Upon your Arrival you will be picked by our Gorge Africa guide who will transfer you to Kampala for an evening night and relaxation. You can visit a few historical sites like the Martyrs shrine in Namugongo, the museum that can only happen if you arrive earlier in the day.

After an early breakfast you will leave the capital Kampala and travel to Jinja, from where you will explore the source river Nile. Along the way, you will have brief stops in Mabira to enjoy a walk through this beautiful forest, you will see different primates and a wide range of birds. The Bujagali Falls is one u can’t miss, floating down on the challenging rapids and relaxing on the shores of the Nile. You will relax for an overnight in Jinja.

We depart Jinja heading to the eastern part of Uganda where we will pass through Mbale, town located in the foothills of Mt Mount Elgon. With some beautiful view points on our way we will reach Sipi Village, settled between mountains and waterfalls. We shall have our lunch & from there you will enjoy a hike to the lovely Sipi Falls. You will pass through maize fields as you climb to the different waterfalls from there you will have your Lunch and an overnight.

After your heavy breakfast we will transfer you to Kapkwata at 2190 meters, this will be the genesis of your hike, following the Kapkwata Trail. It is a scenic route running through the bamboo, heath and moor land, arriving at the Piswa Camp at 2850 meters. Dinner and camping will happen at Piswa Hut Campsite. Its at this point that you will spend your night.

In the morning, you will hike up to the rim of the caldera through beautiful endemic plant species like the giant Lobelia Elgonensis. You will also take a visit to the slopes of Mount Elgon. Visit the hot springs and Suam Gorge before descending to the Hunters Cave Camp at 3850 meters. Its at this point that you will have your Dinner and a night.

The next point will be ascending to the top of the caldera to the Wagagai Peak at 4321 meters. Its at this point that you will have made a full expedition to the top of Mt Elgon. You will later Descend through the Jackson summit at 4200 meters and the Jackson pool to arrive at Mude Cave Camp at 3500 meters. It’s at this point that you will spend a night.

Early morning, from Mude camp you will continue to descend through the Sasa trail to from where you will travel to Mbale town. You will stop over for your lunch from where you will proceed to Kampala where you will relax and reflect you Elgon expedition as the second highest summit in Uganda. You will have Dinner and an overnight.

Fully enriched with lifetime and unforgettable memories it will be your last touring day. Depending on your departure time you might have some time to spend in Kampala or else leave early for Entebbe and visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre for a last meeting with the beautiful flora and fauna of the country from where you will leave for Entebbe airport for your connecting freight or to other adventure destinations.
